Baton Rouge Demographics

Statistics provided by the 2000 census, indicated that there were some 230,000 people within the city, found within almost 90,000 separate households.  These households contained around 53,000 specific families.

Baton Rouge History

Baton Rouge has a long history dating back to 1719, when the French established a military base in the area, although it was originally noted in 1699 by a French explorer, making a scouting trip up the Mississippi River. Since this initial settlement, Baton Rouge has seen seven governing bodies, these being France, England, Spain, Louisiana, the Florida Republic the Confederate States and the United States.

Baton Rouge Economy

Baton Rouge is highly industrialized, and represents a major petrochemical and seaport within the entire area of the southern United States.  Indeed, Baton Rouge port is rated as the ninth largest to be found within the United States.
