Historically, the area in which we now know as East Baton Rouge Parish was settled by the French where a small military outpost was initially built on the site of the current City of Baton Rouge.  Over a period of several centuries, the surrounding area was settled extensively, mainly due to its location by the fertile Mississippi River Delta.
