Gonzales History

The Spanish and the French were the first people to settle the area, and came to live alongside the Houma Indians who were indigenous to the prairieland. The settlement was fairly small to start with, having only around 10 residents until 1851. By 1886, the settlement had grown significantly, and the citizenship required a local law enforcement agency. They summarily elected “Big” Joseph Gonzales as Sheriff, and the name stuck. The railroad did much to encourage growth of Gonzales, and it was finally incorporated as a village in 1922.
