Located within the State of Louisiana, Livingston Parish took its name from Robert Livingston, who was a key negotiator in arranging for the purchase of Louisiana from the French in 1803.

Livingston Parish covers an area of 703 square miles, of which almost all of it, some 648 square miles, is dry land, with only 55 square miles of water. Transportation needs are met by Interstate 12 and U.S. Highway 190, as well as the local trunk roads of Louisiana Highways 16, 22, 40 and 42.

The most recent census of 2000, showed that there were almost 92,000 people living within the parish, contained within around 33,000 separate households, making up 25,000 individual families. The populating density is a healthy 142 people per square mile.

Livingston Parish Schools

The Livingston Parish Public Schools Districts, maintains all of the educational establishments in the area, and also operates the post secondary institution of Southeastern Louisiana University, which is located in Hammond.

Livingston Parish History & Heritage

Livingston parish is rich in history and heritage, and contains within its boundaries several nationally recognized places of specific value to national heritage. The Denham Springs Antique District is nationally famed as one of the best antique trading areas in the nation, with over 30 individual antique shops, many of which exhibit characteristics more akin to a large shopping mall, as they contain a myriad of spate vendors and outlets.

The French Settlement Historical Society Museum is located within an authentic Creole cottage, and contains exhibits which display the town’s French history, such as photographs and records, along with furniture and clothing from the era.
